What Is Inside a Vapor Recovery Skid: Main Components and Their Duties

PHP Warning: Module “zip” is already loaded in Unknown on line 0

A vapor recovery skid is best understood as a sequence of duties rather than a list of parts. Vapor arrives from the loading or transfer operation, liquid that has already condensed is removed, the stream is cooled to recover the bulk of the hydrocarbon, the remaining hydrocarbon is concentrated, and the treated stream leaves the system. Each component exists because one of those duties has to be performed reliably. Reading the skid that way makes it much easier to work out what a given symptom points to.

The inlet and knock-out section

The first duty is to protect everything downstream from liquid. Vapor leaving a tank or a loading arm can carry entrained droplets, and if those reach the condenser or the vacuum pump they cause damage that is both expensive and avoidable. A knock-out drum with a demister element removes them. Its level control and drainage arrangement matter as much as the drum itself, because a drum that fills without being noticed stops performing its duty.

The recovery section

Component Duty What to observe
Knock-out drum Remove entrained liquid Level, drainage and any carryover
Condenser Cool the stream to recover hydrocarbon Outlet temperature, pressure drop, frost
Separation or membrane stage Concentrate the remaining hydrocarbon Stage pressures and recycle flow
Vacuum or transfer blower Move vapor through the train Sound, temperature, seal condition
Separator and receiver Collect recovered liquid Level, drainage and outlet condition
Controls and instrumentation Hold the train at its operating point Readings consistent with duty

The recovery section is where the bulk of the hydrocarbon is turned back into liquid. Because it works on temperature, it is also the section most sensitive to ambient conditions and to the condition of the heat transfer surfaces. A gradual rise in outlet temperature at the same settings usually means the surfaces need attention.

The movement and control sections

Vapor has to be moved through the train, and that is the job of the vacuum pump or blower. Its duty is expressed in flow and pressure difference, and both change as filters load or heat transfer surfaces foul. The control section ties the rest together by maintaining the operating point and by protecting the train from conditions it was not designed for, such as high level in the knock-out drum.

Reading the skid as a sequence

  1. Check the inlet section first, because liquid carryover explains many downstream symptoms;
  2. Confirm the condenser outlet temperature at the current settings;
  3. Compare stage pressures and recycle flow against the normal operating values;
  4. Listen to and feel the blower for changes in sound or temperature;
  5. Check receiver and drum levels and confirm drainage is working;
  6. Review the readings together rather than one at a time, and note what has changed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the knock-out drum come first?

Because everything downstream is vulnerable to liquid. Removing droplets at the inlet is far cheaper than repairing a condenser or a blower damaged by carryover.

Which component is usually the first to show a problem?

In practice it is often the condenser, because its performance depends on heat transfer surfaces that change condition over time. That is why outlet temperature is such a useful routine reading.

Can components be added later?

Some can, particularly instrumentation and additional treatment stages, if space and pressure drop have been considered in the original layout. Retrofitting into a skid designed without that allowance is usually limited.
