The Vacuum Pump in a Vapor Recovery Unit: Duty, Wear Points and Replacement Planning

The vacuum pump is the component that keeps a storage tank’s ullage pressure under control. It draws vapour from the tank and pushes it through the recovery process, and because it runs whenever the system is controlling pressure, it is usually the component that determines the unit’s service interval. Understanding its duty, its wear points and the symptoms that precede failure is what turns replacement into a planned activity instead of an emergency.

What the vacuum pump actually does

The pump establishes the slight vacuum that pulls vapour out of the tank. It does not need to create a deep vacuum; it needs to hold a narrow band reliably while the flow varies. That distinction matters, because the pump is selected for stable control within that band rather than for maximum vacuum capability.

Types of vacuum pump used in these units

Different unit designs use different pump principles, and the choice affects noise, maintenance interval and sensitivity to liquid. What they share is a set of moving parts exposed to a wet, hydrocarbon-bearing gas stream, which is a demanding duty compared with dry air or clean gas service.

Wear points and early warnings

  1. Increased running time for the same tank pressure band, which points to falling pump efficiency or a restricted path;
  2. Change in sound or a rise in vibration, often noticed by site staff before any instrument records it;
  3. Rising temperature at the discharge, which can precede a protection trip;
  4. Liquid appearing more often at the knock-out point, which indicates carryover reaching the pump;
  5. Slow pressure recovery after a delivery, a sign the pump is working against something it did not before.

Wear points and how they show up

Component Wear mechanism Early symptom Suggested action
Seals and gaskets Continuous exposure to hydrocarbon vapour Small leaks, smell of vapour near the unit Replace on schedule rather than on failure
Bearings Continuous running load Rising noise or vibration Inspect at each scheduled service
Internal clearances Gradual wear reduces efficiency Longer running time for the same duty Compare against commissioning data
Liquid knock-out Carryover from the tank or line More frequent draining Review traps and low points

Planning replacement and spares

The single most useful step is to record how the pump behaved when the unit was commissioned: running time for a given pressure band, discharge temperature and sound level. From that baseline, a slow decline becomes measurable instead of anecdotal. Holding a small set of consumable spares on site, and knowing the replacement interval for the seals, converts a failure into a maintenance job.

Common questions

How long does a vacuum pump last?

It depends on running hours, on how much liquid reaches it and on the maintenance carried out. A pump on a site with continuous duty and liquid carryover will not match one on a lightly used site, which is why the baseline record matters more than a generic figure.

Can efficiency loss be corrected rather than replaced?

Sometimes. Where the cause is a restricted vapour path or liquid accumulation, correcting that restores performance. Where the cause is internal wear, the pump or its wearing parts have to be replaced.

Is a quieter pump always a better pump?

No. Noise depends on pump type, mounting and installation as much as on condition. Comparing a pump with its own earlier behaviour is more useful than comparing it with a different unit.
