How Ambient Temperature Swings Change Vapor Recovery Unit Load and Performance

Ambient temperature affects a vapor recovery unit more than most operators expect. The unit is unchanged, the fuel is unchanged and the station throughput is roughly the same, yet the running pattern in winter looks different from the pattern in summer. The reason is that temperature acts on three separate parts of the process at once: the rate at which vapor is generated, the duty the condenser has to meet, and the amount of vapor the pipework and tank can hold.

Effect one: how much vapor is produced

Vapor generation depends heavily on temperature. Warmer fuel releases more vapor for the same volume transferred, and a warm tank head space holds more vapor that has to be displaced as fuel enters. In hot weather the same delivery can therefore present the unit with noticeably more vapor than it does in cold weather, even though the delivery volume is identical.

Effect two: condenser duty

A condenser has to remove both the latent heat of the vapor it is condensing and the sensible heat that comes in with the gas. Warmer incoming gas means a larger sensible load, so a condenser sized around mild conditions will run closer to its limit through a hot period.

Effect three: storage and line behaviour

Temperature also changes what happens before the vapor reaches the unit. Vapor that condenses in the line runs back as liquid instead of being carried forward; conversely, a warm line keeps material in the vapor phase and can deliver it faster than expected. This is one reason two sites with identical equipment can report different cycle behaviour.

What changes on the operating record

Observation Warmer conditions Colder conditions
Vapor load for the same delivery Higher Lower
Condenser duty Higher, closer to the design limit Lower, more margin
Cycle frequency Often shorter, more frequent cycles Often longer, steadier running
Line condensation Less liquid forming in the line More liquid forming and draining
Recovery performance Can appear slightly lower at peak load Usually easier to hold

Practical implications

  1. Compare unit records on a like for like basis, season against the same season, before concluding that performance has changed;
  2. Watch condenser approach temperatures closely through the hottest weeks, since that is when a marginal sizing shows up;
  3. Check drain and condensate handling more often in cold conditions, when line condensation increases;
  4. Note the ambient temperature alongside any performance reading so the comparison stays meaningful;
  5. Raise a seasonal review of settings rather than changing them ad hoc whenever the weather turns.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the unit run longer in summer if it is the same size?

Because the load is genuinely larger. More vapor is generated and more sensible heat arrives with the gas, so the unit has more work to do for the same throughput. Recognising this avoids a hunt for a fault that is not there.

Should settings be changed between seasons?

Where the manufacturer provides seasonal guidance, following it is sensible. Ad hoc adjustments made without a record tend to accumulate, and the unit ends up running on settings nobody can explain.

Can a unit be sized for the hottest conditions only?

Sizing for the worst case gives plenty of margin in cool conditions but costs more and may cycle unnecessarily for much of the year. A balanced approach, with the condenser sized around a realistic design condition and the controls able to cope with the range, usually works better.
