What Is a 3-Stage Vapor Recovery Unit?
A 3-stage vapor recovery unit (VRU) is a compact, skid-mounted processing system that captures gasoline and other light-hydrocarbon vapors from fuel storage tanks and converts them back into liquid fuel. It is widely used at service stations, fuel depots, and loading terminals to cut evaporative losses, protect air quality, and improve operational safety.
Unlike simple passive venting, a 3-stage system uses three complementary separation technologies in series. The staged design delivers a much higher recovery efficiency than any single-stage unit, while keeping energy consumption under control. The result: less product lost to the atmosphere, lower emissions, and a faster return on investment.
The Three Stages at a Glance
Although configurations vary by manufacturer, the classic three-stage architecture combines cooling, separation, and final polishing:
- Stage 1 – Pre-cooling and condensation. Vapor drawn from the tank headspace is cooled in a heat exchanger. As temperature drops, the heavier hydrocarbon components condense back into liquid and are collected. This stage removes the bulk of the recoverable vapor and protects downstream equipment.
- Stage 2 – Deep condensation or membrane separation. The remaining vapor stream passes through a second, deeper cooling stage or Vohon’s self-developed membrane module, which selectively separates hydrocarbon molecules from air. This stage pushes overall recovery well above what condensation alone can achieve.
- Stage 3 – Adsorption polishing. A final activated-carbon or adsorbent bed captures the last traces of hydrocarbon vapor before the cleaned air is discharged. The bed is periodically regenerated, returning captured product to the liquid stream.
